Privacy Policy

Effective date: March 19, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how Kevin Erik Iin (“Beam,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information in connection with the Beam iOS application, the Beacon macOS application, and this website (collectively, the “Services”). We take privacy seriously and have designed our Services from the ground up to collect as little information as possible.

The short version: Beam collects anonymous, non-personal usage analytics to help improve the app. Screen streaming always happens directly between your own two devices: over your local Wi-Fi at home, or over your own Tailscale network if you stream from away from home with Beam Unlimited. We run no servers in that path and your screen content never reaches us.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information We Do Not Collect

The Beam iOS and macOS applications do not collect, transmit, or store any of the following:

  • Your name, email address, or any contact information
  • Account credentials (Beam has no accounts or logins)
  • The content of your screen or audio being streamed
  • Your location data
  • Device identifiers sent to external servers
  • Browsing history or usage patterns sent to us
  • Any personal data whatsoever from within the apps

All video and audio data streamed by Beam travels exclusively between your Mac and your iPhone. This data is encrypted using the paired shared secret established during device pairing, and it never passes through any server of ours.

On your local Wi-Fi it never leaves your network at all. If you stream from away from home with Beam Unlimited, the same encrypted stream is carried over your own Tailscale network instead, which may route across the internet and, where a direct path cannot be established, through a Tailscale relay. A relay cannot read the traffic: Tailscale encrypts it independently between your two devices, and our own pairing encryption sits inside that. Tailscale is a third party you sign in to yourself and is covered by its own privacy policy.

1.2 Pairing Data (Stored Locally Only)

During the initial device-pairing process, Beam generates a shared cryptographic secret that is stored exclusively on your Mac and your iPhone using each device’s secure local storage. This information is never transmitted to us or to any third party. You can delete this pairing data at any time by unpairing devices within the app or by uninstalling the app.

1.3 In-App Analytics (PostHog)

The Beam iOS app uses PostHog, an open-source analytics platform, to collect anonymous usage events. This helps us understand how the app is used and where to focus improvements. The following events are collected:

  • App opened
  • First device paired
  • Stream started and ended (including duration and quality setting)
  • Picture-in-Picture activated
  • Paywall shown
  • In-app purchase initiated and completed

All events are tied to a randomly generated anonymous ID, with no name, email, device identifier, or other personal information is attached. Analytics data is routed through our own domain (beamscreen.app) before being forwarded to PostHog’s EU servers, and is governed by PostHog’s Privacy Policy at posthog.com/privacy.

1.4 Apple App Store Analytics

If you have opted in to share diagnostics and usage data with Apple (a setting controlled entirely by you in your device’s Settings), Apple may collect aggregate, anonymized analytics about how the Beam app is used and share a summary with us through App Store Connect. This data is aggregate and cannot be linked to any individual user. It is governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy, which you can review at apple.com/legal/privacy. We have no ability to identify you from this data.

1.5 In-App Purchases

Purchases of “Beam Unlimited” are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store in-app purchase system. We do not receive or store your payment information, credit card details, or billing address. Your transaction is governed by Apple’s Terms of Sale and Privacy Policy. We only receive a confirmation from Apple that a purchase has been made, which is used solely to unlock the paid features on your device.

1.6 This Website

This website uses PostHog to collect anonymous page view and interaction analytics, routed through our own domain. No cookies are used for tracking, and no personal information is collected. Standard HTTP request data is handled by our hosting provider and not retained by us for profiling purposes.

2. How We Use Information

The anonymous analytics data we collect is used solely to understand how the app is used and to improve the Services. We do not use it to identify individuals, serve advertising, or share it with third parties beyond the analytics processor (PostHog) described above. We do not collect or process any personal data.

3. How We Share Information

We do not sell, rent, trade, or share your personal information with any third party. We have no personal information to share.

The only third parties involved in providing the Services are:

  • Apple Inc.: as the operator of the App Store (iOS and macOS), Apple processes your purchase and may collect data as described in their Privacy Policy. Apple’s involvement is solely as the payment processor and distribution platform.
  • PostHog: anonymous analytics processor for the iOS app and website. Data is routed through our domain and stored on PostHog’s EU servers. See posthog.com/privacy.
  • Tailscale: only if you choose to stream from away from home with Beam Unlimited. You install Tailscale and sign in to it yourself, and it carries the encrypted stream between your two devices. We have no account with them on your behalf and no visibility into your tailnet. See tailscale.com/privacy-policy.
  • Hosting Provider: this website is hosted on a third-party static hosting platform. Standard access logs may be retained by that platform per their own privacy policy.

4. Permissions Used by the Apps

The apps require certain device permissions to function. Below is a plain-language explanation of each permission and exactly how it is used:

Beacon (macOS)

  • Screen Recording: Required to capture your Mac’s display content for streaming. The captured video frames are encoded and transmitted directly to your paired iPhone, over local Wi-Fi or, with Beam Unlimited, over your own Tailscale network. They are never uploaded to any server of ours.
  • Local Network: Required to discover your iPhone on the local network using Bonjour (mDNS/DNS-SD) and to transmit the encrypted video stream.

Beam (iOS)

  • Local Network: Required to discover your Mac on the local network using Bonjour and to receive the encrypted video stream.
  • Camera: Required only during the one-time device pairing process to scan a QR code displayed on your Mac. Camera access is not used during streaming. No photos or video are captured or stored.

5. Data Security

All video and audio data transmitted between your Mac and iPhone is encrypted using the shared cryptographic secret established during pairing. This encryption protects your screen content from interception on shared Wi-Fi networks (such as home or office networks with multiple users). The pairing secret is stored in each device’s secure local storage and is never transmitted over the network or to us.

6. Children's Privacy

The Services are not directed to children under 13 years of age (or under 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe that a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us at [email protected] and we will take steps to delete it.

7. Your Rights Under GDPR (EEA and UK Users)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or UK GDPR with respect to your personal data. Because Beam does not collect or process any personal data through its apps or website, these rights are, in practice, trivially satisfied. There is no personal data for us to access, correct, delete, or port. Nonetheless, we recognize the following rights:

  • Right of access: you may request confirmation of whether we hold any personal data about you.
  • Right to rectification: you may request correction of any inaccurate personal data we hold.
  • Right to erasure: you may request deletion of personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to restriction of processing: you may request that we restrict processing of your data.
  • Right to data portability: you may request a copy of data in a machine-readable format.
  • Right to object: you may object to processing of your data.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days. If you are unsatisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Estonian Data Protection Inspectorate (Andmekaitse Inspektsioon) at aki.ee or your local supervisory authority.

Data Controller: Kevin Erik Iin, operating as Beam. Contact: [email protected]

Legal basis for processing: Not applicable, as we do not process personal data.

8. International Data Transfers

We do not transfer personal data internationally, as we do not collect personal data. Your pairing data and streamed content remain on your own devices. If you stream from away from home, the encrypted stream is carried by your own Tailscale network, which may route it across borders; that routing is Tailscale’s and is covered by their policy. If you purchase Beam Unlimited, Apple processes that transaction in accordance with their own data transfer mechanisms and Privacy Policy.

9. Data Retention

We do not retain any personal data because we do not collect it. The only data stored in connection with Beam is the pairing secret stored locally on your own devices. This is retained until you unpair the devices or uninstall the app.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Your continued use of the Services after any update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy. Material changes will be noted within the app where feasible.
